Amazon Redshift increases performance for new queries in dashboards and ETL workloads by up to 7x

Amazon Redshift Performance Improvement
Amazon Redshift has improved the performance of BI dashboards and ETL workloads by speeding up new queries by up to 7x. This improvement enhances response times for low-latency SQL queries used in near real-time analytics, BI dashboards, ETL pipelines, and AI agents. Redshift now accelerates the SQL query preparation process, resulting in faster query starts and quicker results.
This enhancement is achieved through a new optimization in query compilation, where new queries are processed immediately using composition. Composition generates a lightweight arrangement of pre-existing logic while creating optimized, query-specific code that is executed across available compute resources. This technique removes compilation from the critical path of query execution, allowing for immediate execution while compilation proceeds in the background.
The optimization is enabled by default for all SQL queries across provisioned clusters and serverless workgroups in all commercial AWS Regions. It is available on the Redshift current track and will be available on other tracks in upcoming patch releases. No action is required from customers, and there is no additional cost.
What to do
- Monitor query performance improvements in your BI dashboards and ETL workloads.
- Verify that the optimization is enabled by default in your Redshift clusters and workgroups.
