Amazon RDS for Oracle now supports minor version upgrade prechecks and a new RDS event to help reduce patching downtime

Amazon RDS for Oracle Updates
Amazon RDS for Oracle now allows you to run a minor version upgrade precheck before starting an upgrade or during your scheduled maintenance window. This feature helps identify potential issues that could prevent the upgrade from completing, such as insufficient free storage or invalid objects. The precheck is read-only and does not affect your workload.
Additionally, RDS for Oracle now emits a new event, RDS-EVENT-0596, when your DB instance is ready to accept connections again during a minor version upgrade or operating system update. This event can be used to automate application reconnection or notify your teams.
What to do
- Run the rdsadmin.rdsadmin_precheck_tasks.precheck_minor_upgrade procedure to check for potential issues before your maintenance window.
- Subscribe to RDS-EVENT-0596 to automate application reconnection or notify your teams when the database is back online.
