Amazon EC2 announces interruptible Capacity Reservations

Amazon EC2 Interruptible Capacity Reservations
Amazon EC2 introduces interruptible Capacity Reservations to optimize reserved capacity usage and reduce costs. On-Demand Capacity Reservations (ODCRs) allow you to reserve compute capacity in a specific Availability Zone for any duration. When ODCRs are not in use, they can now be made temporarily available as interruptible ODCRs, enabling other workloads within your organization to utilize them while you retain the ability to reclaim the capacity for critical operations.
Workloads suitable for flexible, fault-tolerant operations—such as batch processing, data analysis, and machine learning training—can benefit from temporarily available capacity. Reservation owners can reclaim their capacity at any time, and consumers of interruptible ODCRs will receive an interruption notice before termination to allow for graceful shutdown or checkpointing.
Interruptible ODCRs are available at no additional cost to all Capacity Reservations customers. Check the AWS Capabilities by Region website for regional availability. CloudFormation support will be available soon. For more details, refer to the Capacity Reservations user guide.
What to do
- Repurpose unused ODCRs as interruptible ODCRs for flexible workloads.
- Monitor interruption notices to ensure graceful shutdown or checkpointing.
- Check regional availability on the AWS Capabilities by Region website.
- Stay tuned for CloudFormation support.
