Amazon SageMaker Unified Studio Notebooks now support Amazon EMR Serverless with Apache Spark Connect, enhancing flexibility for data engineers and analysts in choosing their Spark runtime for interactive analytics and data engineering workloads.

  • New Feature: Support for Amazon EMR Serverless as a Spark runtime, alongside Amazon Athena Spark.
  • Functionality: Run PySpark and Spark SQL on an EMR Serverless Spark Application in Notebook cells.
  • User Experience: Select Spark runtime from the Notebook side panel, applicable to both Python and SQL cells.
  • AI Assistance: Use SageMaker Data Agent to generate code and execution plans from natural language prompts, accelerating Spark development workflows.
  • Performance: Pre-initialized capacity for improved session start times and unified Spark UI monitoring for consistent visibility.
  • Security: VPC connectivity support for workloads requiring network isolation.
  • Availability: Available in all AWS Regions where Amazon SageMaker Unified Studio is available.
